With many around the world quarantined due to the COVID-19 pandemic (some with their significant other), a number of people think that a baby boom will likely occur.

With this, researchers have looked into the possibility of a COVID-19 baby boom happening.

In a study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology, researchers looked at the effect of the COVID-19 lifestyle in the desire of couples to have a baby.

The study looked at the situation in Italy, a country where the effects of the virus were tremendously felt. A questionnaire was carried out with 1482 respondents, including 944 women (63.7%) and 538 men (36.3%). The participants were between the ages of 18-46, and are in a stable heterosexual relationship for at least twelve months.

The findings showed that the quarantine had a significant impact on people’s mental health and wellbeing. The researchers said, “What we found the main reasons that led people to not wanting to conceive included worries related to future economic difficulties and consequences on pregnancy.”

“Interestingly, a large amount (37.3%) of couples who were planning to have a child, decided to interrupt the pursuit during the quarantine,” the study said. This decision isn’t apparent to everyone in the study, though.

Researchers added, “However, an important aspect should be highlighted: the couples who were already involved in childbearing attempts and continue in this project are more than 60%.”
