The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially announced last June 14, Friday that the rainy season has finally begun. While this means we will be seeing more frequent rainfall, especially in the western sections of Luzon and Visayas, “monsoon breaks” will also be a common occurrence. Monsoon breaks refer to stoppage of rain for several days at a time.

PAGASA administrator Vicente Manalo stated: “The occurrence of scattered to at times widespread rainfall associated with the Southwest Monsoon during the past few days as observed by most PAGASA stations in the western section of the country confirms the onset of the rainy season over the areas under the Type I climate.”

However, rain in Mindanao and Southern Visayas are predicted to be “generally below normal.” The weak El Niño conditions will also continue to be felt throughout June, July, and August.

As always, Manalo promises that “PAGASA will continue to closely monitor the situation and updates/advisories shall be issued as appropriate. The public and all concerned agencies are advised to take precautionary measures against the impacts of the rainy season.”
