For the voters who have not had the chance to register yet, they will have the opportunity to do so already.

In an interview, COMELEC Spokesman James Jimenez answered: “We hope to start in June.” when asked about the date for the resumption of the registration.

Additionally, he mentioned that they are in the midst of waiting on the approval of the Commission en banc before they officially start the registration for voting.

As for why they intend to start as soon as possible, Jimenez shared that they are doing so as to cater to the several inquiries that they are receiving about it. “We have been getting a lot of inquiries, so there is obviously a big interest,” he mentioned.

According to Jimenez, “The resumption of voter registration is dependent on our readiness. The fact that we are asking for it in June means we are ready”.

Although, the poll official shares that he does not anticipate a large number of new registrants. “In recent times, we have had several registration periods. So that might have an impact. There may not be that much,” Jimenez said.

“We now have one continuing registration period, except that it is suspended temporarily every time there is an election,” he added.

For the recent May 2019 elections, it was recently reported that there were 2.5 Million new Filipinos who registered to vote where it exceeded the initial expectations of COMELEC where they initially anticipated less than 2 Million. Last year, the COMELEC spokesman encouraged Filipinos to register because it “means you’re in a position to help bring about actual change”.

And for the number who actually voted, COMELEC data shows that there were 61,843,750 registered voters in the Philippines and 1,822,173 more have registered to vote from overseas. Over 61 million Filipinos had the opportunity to vote for the Senator who will create our country’s laws in the Senate for the following 6 years, and who will run the country’s daily affairs in the local regions for the next 3 years.

Last year’s voter registration period was held from July 2, 2018 to September 29, 2018, and was adjourned in order to make way to the May 2019 midterm polls.
Go out, register, and vote!
