Philippine team fencer Maxine Esteban has been inspired to do all she can to aid in the fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The Ateneo fencing star launched the fundraising drive A Small Thing Goes A Long Way with her sisters last April 10. Already they have been able to raise Php 339,000, 50 pieces of COVID-19 Uratex pillows and 92 bottles of alcohol.

“At first, I wanted to make my break productive. I really thought of how I can do my part as a Filipino citizen and as a national athlete to help out our frontliners,” said Maxine.

“I feel like the youth has to actively participate and take part in helping the government find ways to reach out to the medical frontliners and the affected communities.”

Maxine also shared that she was influenced by Hidilyn Diaz, the weightlifting world cup gold medalist, who also launched a COVID-19 fundraiser.

“I was really surprised because I saw Ate Hidilyn raise funds also that is why I started one as well,” Maxine explained. “I think she reached almost P100,000 so I was surprised when I saw my friends donating a lot and some people I don’t even know.”

The donations from A Small Thing Goes A Long Way will be going to the UST Hospital, UERM Memorial Hospital, National Children’s Hospital, and affected communities in San Juan City.

Maxine’s fundraiser will run until April 26. You may donate through the following ways:
