There have been 74,000 fires in the Brazilian Amazon since the beginning of this year—a staggering 84% increase over the same period last year (National Institute for Space Research, Brazil). Scientists and conservationists attribute the accelerating deforestation to President Jair Bolsonaro, who issued an open invitation to loggers and farmers to clear the land after taking office in January.⁣ ⁣ The largest rainforest in the world is a critical piece of the global climate solution. “#EarthAlliance has formed an emergency Amazon Forest Fund with $5m to focus critical resources for indigenous communities and other local partners working to protect the biodiversity of the Amazon against the surge of fires,” Earth Alliance tweeted in explanation.

The amount donated by Earth Alliance will be distributed to 5 local organizations involved in the efforts of “combating the fires, protecting indigenous lands, and providing relief to the communities impacted.” These 5 organizations are Instituto Associacao Floresta Protegida (Kayapo), Coordination of the Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB), Instituto Kabu (Kayapo), Instituto Raoni (Kayapo), and Instituto Socioambiental (ISA).

Earth Alliance was only recently founded last July by DiCaprio and philanthropists Laurene Powell Jobs and Brian Sheth. It was merged with the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) in order to “help address the urgent threats to our planet’s life support systems.”

What do you think we can do to address the Amazon fires?
