If you’re looking for something to admire while in quarantine, this April’s full moon is going to be an extra special one. On April 8, we will be witnessing what we call a “Pink Super Moon.” There have been many supermoons this year, but this month’s supermoon will be the biggest and brightest one for 2020.

The reason for this is because it will be the time that the moon will be closest to earth all year, making it appear larger and bigger. Because of what we call a lunar perigee, the full moon will swing closer to its elliptical orbit to Earth.

However, even if it’s called a “Pink Moon,” the moon won’t necessarily look pink. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, it’s called a “Pink Moon” in reference to a type of wildflower native to North America called ‘phlox subulata.’ As such, the fuchsia color of this plant is what gives this moon its name. It is also going to be the first full moon after the spring equinox.
