(Government plans to bring back Good Manners and Right Conduct subject for all levels)

Senate Bill 1224 or the Comprehensive Values Education Act was favored by the majority in Monday’s Senate session. The bill requires elementary and high school students under the K to 12 curriculum to take a values education subject for an hour daily.

As it stands, values education is only taught for 30 minutes each day at the elementary level and an hour twice a week in secondary education. For Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, sponsor of the bill, this time allotment is not sufficient.

Aside from a difference in time allotment, the bill stipulates that the curriculum includes role-playing in the classroom, community immersion activities, teacher-parent collaborative learning activities, school-initiated values formation activities and other forms of experiential learning activities.

The bill’s counterpart was approved in the House of Representatives earlier this February.
