Here’s something else to look forward to while we’re all stuck at home – a night of stargazing as the Eta Aquarid meteor shower fills the sky. Or several nights, actually.

The Eta Aquarid meteor shower typically takes place from mid-April until the end of May every year but it is most visible at its peak. This year, that takes place from May 1 to May 5.

While the meteor shower is more visible in the southern hemisphere, we still have a good chance of seeing some shooting stars over here in the northern hemisphere. The best time to view it will be after midnight until the early hours of dawn.

Earthsky recommends spending a good hour just stargazing as “meteors tend to come in spurts that are interspersed by lulls.” That means you’ll need a little time to be lucky enough to catch the shooting stars – which are actually leftover debris from Halley’s Comet.

So, pick a comfortable spot tonight and enjoy the stars!
