The COVID-19 pandemic has put a hold on our daily lives as we know it, and our children are affected, as well. When schools shut down during quarantine, many parents suddenly became homeschool teachers and the future of our children’s education brought about some big and important questions. When will school resume? How different will things be next school year?

Well, while the school year here in the Philippines used to start in June, the Department of Education (DepEd) has announced that schools will now open in August while the Philippines faces the current pandemic.

As per an online press briefing, the new school year is now scheduled to start on August 24, 2020 and end on April 30, 2021. This decision has been made based on a consultation with stakeholders and has been reported to the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Disease, which manages our efforts to control the spread of the pandemic.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones points out that not all students and teachers will be physically going to school once school starts, though, since lockdowns may still be in place in specific areas. Instead, different approaches may be implemented, such as online learning and the use of media.

Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan clarifies that the department’s field units will decide on the appropriate delivery modes when the time comes, depending on the schools’ situations and locations. Students may also be asked to answer a survey during enrollment regarding their preferred methods of learning and their available gadgets at home. Teachers, on the other hand, will be going to work by June to get ready for the new school year.

How do you think your child’s school should go about this?
