The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) asked universities and colleges to “exercise leniency” towards students who are having difficulty complying with submission of online tasks. Due to class suspensions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), most schools have shifted to online classes.

According to Prospero De Vera III, CHED chairperson, said he has received complaints from students who are unable to comply with requirements due “poor internet connection and the policy of home quarantine”. CHED urges Higher Education Institution or HEIs to “exercise leniency and help the students during these difficult time”. CHED’s De Vera said in a statement, adding the commission will take corrective actions if HEIs do not act accordingly. Some colleges and universities have also suspended their online and distance learning classes.

Meanwhile telecom companies are doing their part to help their subscribers or customers cope with the current situation, Globe, Smart, and PLDT are extending their bill payment period or deadline to 30 days. In an advisory, PLDT announced free boost that will bring the minimum speed to 25 megabits per second (mbps) until April 30, 2020 to residents of Metro Manila and parts of Greater Manila – Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal. Its mobile subsidiary Smart Communications Inc. has also announced similar measures. Globe has not announced any boost in Internet speed but assured its customers of reliable connection throughout the Luzon-wide quarantine. It also urges Internet users to avoid torrents or user-to-user downloads that use up a lot of bandwidth to avoid slowdown in connection.
