A lot of companies try to instill an enthusiastic and happy environment for their employees to increase work-flow and productivity. However, the constant barrage of people trying to make you smile when all you want to do is crawl under your desk and cry could actually take a toll on you.

They note that putting on a fake happy mask at work could have a negative effect on your mental health, as well as your physical health, so much so that it could lead to cardiovascular issues.

Author and Harvard Medical School psychologist Susan David says, “People who focus on being happy actually, over time, become less happy.” She makes it clear that she’s not anti-happiness, but she says staving off negative emotions and suppressing them will not make anyone happier.

Besides, feeling a bit down seems to make people more attentive and detail-oriented. Joseph Forgas, a professor of psychology at the University of New South Wales has research that suggests that “communication and critical thinking skills can increase when your happiness levels decrease”.

It’s just that every person has their own thing going on and it will affect their moods in the workplace whether your team leaders or managers like it or not. There’s no use pretending to be as bright as the sun if it’s just going to burden you all day.

Of course, this could be a little tricky if you’re working in customer service. Still, it’s okay to be a little masungit sometimes.
