Whether you prefer them as handheld donuts or bite-sized munchkins, the Choco Butternut experience is unlike any other. It’s rich, chocolatey, and soft, and comes with a coating of orange, nutty crumble. Yum!

Although Dunkin’ Donut currently delivers, they don’t cover the whole country yet. Don’t worry, though. You can now make it at home, thanks to this recipe by Eunice Acupanda (IG: @youukneesx).

Choco Butternut Munchkins

Ingredients

Chocolate Cake

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup of cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 1 tsp of baking soda
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup of vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp of black coffee + 1/3 cup of hot water, mixed
  • 1 tbsp of distilled white vinegar

Chocolate Glaze

  • 1/2 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup of cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup of evaporated or fresh milk

Butternut Streusel

  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 4 tbsp of butter
  • 4 tbsp of sugar
  • Orange food coloring (liquid)
  • 1/2 tsp of vanilla

Procedure

Chocolate Cake

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Combine your dry ingredients— flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt— in a bowl. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, mix your vegetable oil, sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and coffee mixture. Gradually whisk your eggs together, and stream in the white vinegar.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Toss them together until fully combined. DO NOT OVERMIX.
  5. Pour the cake batter in a greased round cake pan. Bake it in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the toothpick that is inserted in the middle comes out clean.
  6. Let it cool, then crumble the cake. Form them into neat balls, and place them onto a baking tray. Refrigerate them in the meantime so that they hold their form.

Chocolate Glaze

  1. Combine your powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and evaporated milk in a bowl until fully combined. Set aside.

Butternut Streusel

  1. In a pan over medium heat, melt your butter, then add sugar.
  2. Mix in your vanilla extract, and add your flour. Keep mixing until it becomes a crumbly streusel.
  3. Add the orange food coloring. If you have a blender or food processor, you can transfer your mixture there. Pulse until the color is fully integrated into the streusel.

Final Touches

  1. Dip your chocolate balls in the chocolate glaze.
  2. Roll them over your butternut streusel, making sure that all sides are fully coated.
  3. Refrigerate overnight so the texture improves.
