Mayday Parade opened their second and final night of the Welcome to Sunnyland Philippine tour with “Never Sure”, the first song off of their 2018 album Sunnyland. Before last weekend, the last we saw of them was three years ago in 2017 during their 10th anniversary tour. Surely, fans are aware that the Philippines is nothing foreign to the 5-piece band. In fact, during a FaceTime catch-up with his kids earlier that morning, front man Derek Sanders revealed his love for the Philippines and their fans by promising to bring them to the country soon.

Last Sunday’s show was held at the New Frontier Theatre, a venue they previously played in before (though it was called Kia Theatre then). To date, they have played a total of six shows on our tropical shores, some were at punk/rock music festivals.

The songs they played for the Filipino fans were a combination of new tunes from their latest album, as well as old ones that made the fans feel nostalgic – such as their very first song “3 cheers for 5 years.” Noticeably, the much older songs were the pieces fans sang the loudest. Among these were an acoustic performance of the widely popular heartbreak song “Terrible Things”, as well as a song Derek sang with drummer Jake, “Miserable at Best”, another crowd favorite.

Aside from their own songs, the band also sang a rock cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know”.

With hands up in the air and voices at the top of their lungs, the night gave Filipino fans a real treat. Speaking of treats, several lucky members in the VIP section got a few of the band’s drumsticks and guitar picks.

During their encore performance where they sang “I’d Hate To Be With You When They Find Out What This Song is About”, Derek promised to return to the Philippines soon and that’s something Filipino fans need to look forward to. Hopefully, Derek brings his kids next time.
